The Best Mom Jeans + Buying Tips

I have to be honest. Before this year the only jeans I owned were old Abercrombie jeans from when I was in high school. Which was almost 10 years ago. So needless to say I needed a closet refresh and made it my goal this year to get some timeless and long lasting jeans and get rid of my old high school pairs that were just not fitting my style anymore. So I went through my closet, pulled all the jeans I wasn’t interested in keeping anymore and listed them for cheap on Facebook Marketplace (guide to selling literally anything online coming soon!) After about a week a had some extra spending money from my sales and I was ready to go on the hunt! My goal: find comfortable, cute, flattering, budget friendly trendy mom jeans.

I hate it when I see a cute outfit on Instagram and I click the like to know it and the jeans are $198 or above. As a girl on a budget I just can’t swing that! I looked for jeans under $100, especially jeans that went on sale for a really good price often. Here are my top favorites that I found.

Abercrombie Mom Jeans. These are a rigid fit so they have 0 stretch, which I actually love! They feel like a really good quality denim that will last you forever without wearing out. Yes, they don’t have a lot of stretch, but they do stretch out once you start to wear them and break them in throughout the day. I stuck with my normal size 28L in these jeans and while they were tight when I initially put them on they did loosen once I had worn them all day, they felt more comfortable around my thighs and hips. What I love about these is that I found them on a huge sale for under $30! They have cute distressing around the ankle and aren’t too wide at the bottom, which is not flattering on my body type. So I say wait for a sale or check the clearance section daily, you can find tons of cute jeans for under $30 there all the time! If you are 5’7″ and above I recommend going with the long inseam since it is distressed at the bottom, mine still are a little cropped around my ankles even with the longer inseam! (Also excuse my knee that looks like it is being suffocated, I have one string holding on before it breaks! Lol)

American Eagle Mom Jeans. I have been seeing these all over Instagram lately so when I found them on sale and had a discount code (making them around $25) I thought, why not, let’s try them! Pros, they are super comfy and not as rigid as a fit (if you like a more denim spandex type hybrid). I love the distressed knees and that the legs are pretty roomy. They are super cute with a perfect high waist. I will warn you, I do have two downsides. One is that the legs stays pretty wide at the ankles. I could go for a skinnier leg than what they have. The Abercrombie legs seem to taper ever so slightly which I find a little more flattering. The other semi con, semi pro is that the fabric is very thin. At first I didn’t really love that, but now that it is summer and the warmer temps are coming out I think they will be a great option when you want to wear jeans but don’t want to wear a heavy jean material. Overall I would say get them when they are on sale because they are so perfect for summer! I got a 6 and they have a little room around the waist but are snug in the hips so I would not be able to size down. If you are over 5’7″ I recommend going with the long or extra long inseam! The long inseam is even a little short on me so if you want more of a full length, go longer.

TIPS FOR FINDING THE BEST MOM JEANS

I shared my two favorite budget friendly choices above and now its time for some tips that helped me to find flattering mom jeans!

  1. Make sure you know what type of fabric you want and what type of fabric the jeans that you are getting are. When I got the Abercrombie jeans in the mail I was very surprised by the feel and fit because I didn’t look at that before I bought them! So if you know you like rigid jeans look for that type of material. If you are a comfy jeggings girl who likes stretch, look out for that! It will save you a lot of grief and time if you know what you want and make sure that is what you are buying (returns take forever and are a pain!) PS. American Eagle now has a stretch mom jean if you like your jeans to have stretch to them! Linked here!
  2. Measure your inseam. I made the mistake of getting a regular inseam because I can get away with that sometimes, but not when there is distressing on the bottom of most jeans now! So be sure to see what inseam each different pair of jeans has (it can vary by 1-3″) and measure it out on yourself! You can get them really high and cropped above the ankles or if you like a full length you can get a long or extra long inseam. Again, saves you time! I personally like them to be cropped right at my ankles, I think it is the most flattering and shows off your cute shoes!
  3. Don’t be afraid to try a straight leg jean to get the same type of look. Abercrombie’s straight leg jean is just as cute with with a more tapered leg! Still gives you a little loose fit but if you have slimmer legs or don’t want to fully commit to the mom jean these are a great option to still wear the trend.
  4. Size up for a looser fit. Most of the mom jeans that I have tried so have a more rigid fabric, so if you want a loose fit or want extra room in the hips and thigh area I recommend trying the size up. You might find them to be a little more comfortable to sit and bend in if you have hips or a booty!
