When Facebook alerted me that Houston and I have been friends on Facebook for 2 years it reminded me that this is around the time when we first met. It brought back so many amazing memories! So for today I wanted to do something a little different and more personal and tell the story of how our story come to be. Enjoy!
The summer before my senior year of high school I went to take my senior portraits with my aunt, Susanne Ashby (who is an amazing photographer!) and her photographer friend Morgan (who just randomly wanted to come on this shoot). After the shoot Morgan tells me that her younger brother had JUST left on his mission in Colorado (for more info about missions click here) and that I needed to write to him. She even had a picture pulled up on her phone all ready for me see (because who wouldn’t need confirmation that he was cute?!) I kind of just shrugged it off and said “Yea, sure, I might do that,” just to make her happy because I was NOT the kind of person to write a letter to a stranger, no matter how cute he was in his pictures!
That night ended and a couple weeks went by and still did not write him a letter. But Morgan would text me periodically and ask if I had written him or remind me of his address. I really was not thinking that I would ever write to him because it was so out of my comfort zone, but I could not stop thinking about him and this dumb letter! So one day I surprised myself and my whole family (and probably Houston) by writing what must have been the most awkward letter where my opening line was somewhere along the lines of “Hey we have never met but here is a letter telling you who I am.” I must have had 10 drafts before I finally just decided to write what I wanted and see what happened. I was SOOOO nervous to put that letter in the mail! I didn’t even know if he was going to write me back! But my awkward letter obviously got him to be interested enough and a little while later I got a letter back. Until the end of his 2 year mission we wrote letters to each other, sent pictures, and emailed when we could. I remember the giddy anticipation I would feel when I got a letter and hadn’t opened it yet or when Monday would come and I would wait for his emails. I had a rough second semester of college but knowing that I had a letter coming or that I would get to email him always made things seem better!
But little did I know that the best was yet to come. Near the end of his mission he emailed me and let me know when he was coming home and when we could finally meet in person. The week that he was coming home his sister Morgan (the photographer from before) asked if I could do a shoot for her and of course I agreed. His other sister Maddy got me all dolled up and we went to this really pretty spot on a hill for the shoot. I was in full on focus mode while we were taking these pictures when all of the sudden I felt this presence next to me and I’m thinking, “Who the heck feels comfortable coming and standing RIGHT next to someone they don’t know??” So I look over and seriously stare for a solid 5-8 seconds (which if you count out in your mind is a LONG time to stare at someone) and my mind slowly realizes that it’s Houston standing there. I was SOOO shocked and caught off guard! I ,one, couldn’t believe that he had given me a fake date so that he could plan this whole surprise for me and two, couldn’t believe that I was actually meeting this boy that I had been writing for almost two years. I have never felt more special/flustered/shocked/tricked in my entire life! As you can see in the pictures I could not contain myself and it took a while before I calmed down. But I after a couple days the shock finally wore off, we went on our first date, and the rest is history.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately and I have just been feeling so grateful that Houston is in my life. I have never met anyone like him before, he makes me feel so special (since day one!) and loved (which is how every woman deserves to feel!). Plus, I don’t think that there is anyone else would could put up with me the way that he does! He is my rock!
You can take a look below at my many different emotions that day. These pictures are some of my favorites because it is so real and all of my emotions and reactions are now documented, which I love! Thanks for reading this little excerpt from my life, hope you enjoy!
